Yes you heard right. As of March 1. 2012 Google Friend Connect will be discontinued. Does anyone else find this as shocking as I do? It makes me sad to know how hard myself and other fellow bloggers have worked to build up their GFC followers, only to have them taken away. I can only imagine what most of you are thinking hearing this news. I have read so many posts about bloggers losing all of their GFC followers and how they have had to start from scratch:( However, I do have some good new in all this.
If your blog is on Blogger. Like myself, Don’t fret! Apparently GFC is being discontinued on non-blogger blogs only. Not that I’m complaining but I’m not sure why they would take it away from all sites other than Blogger. It makes me wonder if eventually they will fade it out of Blogger as well. Only time will tell I guess.
I am guessing anyone who follows a WordPress blog through GFC will lose updates from those sites when it’s officially discontinued, which sucks because I know a lot of you have switched to the WordPress platform. What a PITA that is going to be re-following all the WordPress blogs we follow and transferring them over to Google +. I know myself, I follow a lot of WP blogs!
My suggestion is if you currently aren’t using Google +, now is the time! Sign up, familiarize yourself with it and post the Google+ widget on your blog. Google has stated that GFC hasn’t had the impact they had hoped for. Ummm… I’m not sure what else you are looking for Google? Other than MILLIONS of daily users who use that feature!! Why are these huge companies constantly changing? For example, Facebook. Almost every time you log in something is moved around or missing. Doesn’t this irritate you? GRRRRR!
I understand that they want to make things more organized and easier to navigate but, I wasn’t complaining, were you? Like the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” You can give a website a new feel or look without completely changing everything! On the other hand, If you think about it, once someone “follows” a blog with Google Friend Connect, there’s nothing to keep them coming back. They could follow thousands of blogs with GFC and not visit a single one again. Now a blog’s RSS feed or email subscription is a more telling sign of blog followers.
I guess Google + is the way to go now. From my experience so far, it’s not that hard to use, even though I have a little more learning to do. Gives me an excuse to use my brain! Something I didn’t want to do a lot of today 🙁 LOL! I have added Google+ button to my sidebar, it will now be an entry option for any upcoming giveaways I have.
What are your thoughts on GFC being discontinued?
