Planning a visit to Canada? Why not check out the beautiful city of Calgary! A trip to Calgary, Alberta would not be complete without a stop at the Calgary tower. Officially opened June 30th 1968 to celebrate Canada’s centennial, located 191 metres above the downtown core, the tower has become the City of Calgary’s most famous and identifiable physical landmark. One of the first Towers of it’s kind, the Calgary Tower offers the best view in Calgary and is a must-see on any tourist’s itinerary.
The Observation Deck
Dare to try something that will take your breath away? An elevator takes you to the top in about a minute. Once you reach the observation deck you’re treated to panoramic views of the city and a small area with a glass floor where you will experience the world at your feet… literally! Imagine being able to virtually “step out into” space! The glass floor is 36 feet long and more than four feet wide, the glass panes that make up the floor can each hold the weight of a couple Hippos!
The observation deck also features six high-powered binoculars, two touch screens (one facing west and one north) highlight key Calgary viewpoints and a hurricane simulator. During peak hours you can enjoy a complimentary tour and learn about Calgary’s history, landmarks, and future plans.
Fun Fact: The Tower was designed to withstand the elements (climate, high winds, shock, etc.). Although Calgary is not an earthquake zone, this structure was the first in the Western provinces designed to withstand earthquakes. On a windy day the Tower can, and will, sway up to 16.5 centimeters or 7.5 inches (how scary is that!) and can withstand winds up to 161 km/hr.
Shopping at the Calgary Tower
Gift shops are located at the base of the Calgary Tower and on the Observation Deck. The boutiques specialize in unique Calgary Tower memorabilia and exclusive Canadian apparel and keepsakes, as well as a wide variety of collectibles. You can even mail your postcards and letters from Canada’s highest mailbox!
Dining at the Calgary Tower
In addition to all this, visitors at the Tower can dine in one of two restaurants. SKY 360 is located at 155 metres and completes a full rotation every 45 minutes during lunch and every 60 minutes during dinner. On the second level of the Tower, you will find Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, which features New Orleans style cuisine and an inviting atmosphere.
